Just a quick note to our readers, clients, & friends. StepForth will be closed on Monday May 24 for the Victoria Day, May Long Weekend.

We hope for those of you who observe this holiday that you have a wonderful and safe long weekend.

We will be back to normal hours on Tuesday May 25th.

Google local business center Victoria lawyerI found this rather interesting bug over at Google today.

When doing a search for “Victoria BC Lawyer”, in the Local Business results I found that only one of the seven results were actually for law offices! The remaining 6 were for doctors as well as a government publishing office.

One would think that Google has been doing this long enough to not make such a big error – 1 out of 7 results relevant to the search?  That’s pretty poor if you ask me.

Yahoo is Broken?

Over at Yahoo they seem to be running into some technical difficulties. Regardless of the search phrase used, organic results are not appearing and the error message “We had temporary problems searching for web pages. Search again for <phrase> or type a new query above.

Regardless of the search phrase I tried, I continued to receive this error.

Interestingly enough, sponsored links continued to appear. Anyone else having these same issues this morning? There is not word out yet as far as what is causing this issue or how widespread it is.

Well it’s official. Google is now incorporating site load speed into its ranking algorithm according to a Webmaster Central Blog post earlier this morning.

There has been chatter about this addition being in the works for some time, and if you ask me, its one that will significantly help to improve the overall quality of search results and end user experience. Read more…

Yesterday Google announced in the Webmaster Central blog the added expansion for images within XML Sitemaps.

By expanding your XML Sitemap to include images in the new format, this will allow Google to easily learn which images you consider important. With image related queries being performed at Google every day, this extra step may help you to benefit from a bit of increased image related traffic. Read more…

Happy Easter from StepForth

In order to spend time with our families, StepForth will be closed tomorrow (Friday, April 02) for the Easter Holiday.

We hope everyone has a great long weekend, and may the Easter Bunny be good to all of you :) We will be back to our normal hours again on Monday April 05.

Dear Microsoft. While I value a wider selection brought on by competition, ever since you launched adCenter, your back-end has been plagued with troubles. I find it alarming that even after all this time, some basic fundamental usability issues are still not addressed and getting things done within your system continues to be a burden. The complete frustration brought on by using your system significantly reduces the value of its existence, simply because I dread even using it!

There are too many issues that drive me completely up the wall to even write about – the thought of including every little problem overwhelms me to the point of wanting to just shut off my computer and forget about even writing this memo. I will however grin and bear it and share with you some of your faults that drive me bonkers. Read more…

Google Webmaster Tools is very useful for a number of things, but this article will focus on improving your inbound links and on site Page Rank.

Even the best webmasters sometimes have broken links on their site. Even the best webmasters sometimes move or delete a page without properly 301 redirecting the old URL to a new replacement. It happens all the time, but if the 404 error created by these mistakes is not addressed the website may not be living up to its full potential. Read more…

The Little Things Add up with SEO

Let me give this analogy a try; It takes 100 pennies to make a dollar. If you are happy and content with having just 90 cents, then that’s okay, but if you demand the full dollar, you can’t ignore a few pennies just because they are not perfectly shiny, they must be included.

The same goes for SEO. There are many bits and pieces that allow a site to be well optimized. Many are fundamental and easily implemented, such as proper tags, while others are more trivial and easily ignored such as page load time, but it’s these trivial things that really add up to make the difference. Google is changing, and becoming far more effective than ever before. With personal and universal search we have seen results and information more relevant to our searches. Now with the relatively new real-time search, we are starting to see just how it can have a positive impact on results, and also give us more reason to trust in social media. Read more…
