Google Cows Point North

cow compass

The Los Angeles Times reports German researchers, through the help of Google Earth, have discovered that 2 out of 3 cows point North.

Using Google Earth, the researchers studied more than 300 herds of cattle from around the world. Of the 8510 cows they observed, two thirds of them had aligned themselves to face magnetic north while grazing or resting.

This is the first discovery of large land mammals to have this built-in compass. Other animals such as birds and most bees have a similar trait to aid with migration.

So, if you ever find your self lost out at the farm, take a look at the near by cows to help guide you safely home.

I am amazed, that German researchers have the time to find this stuff out, or that they actually get paid to find this stuff out. Especially when google earth has my house on the wrong side of the road.

At one point I was going to buy a compass, but after writing this blog post, I changed my “facebook status” to “Going to buy a cow”. That confused the heck out of everyone, especially my mother. “What?? What on earth are you going to do with a cow”. The cow is still on order.

    Wow!

The Medicine Wheel is an ancient plains Indian system of observing order and cycles within nature.

Cows pointing North, it’s about time someone noticed that.

Here’s the key, how many OTHER neat things are there about nature and planet earth that you are still not noticing much of?

Seeing with Native Eyes could help you notice stuff like this so much more, and make life so much more darn interesting.

    Enjoy,

Guess that 2 of 3 cows are female, they point North to get good sun tanning from the back, and 1 of 3 are males who don’t care about how they actually look ;)
