Highlight of the Week: Is Overture Overextending Itself in Europe?

Overture Search ServicesIn a move that has set off the water-cooler debates in our office, Overture continues its aggressive moves into the European market with the opening of offices in the Netherlands yesterday. The new outlet is the fifth European branch office opened in the last two years, joining offices in the UK, France, Germany and Italy. Overture plans further expansions into Spain, Switzerland, Austria, Scandinavia, Belgium and Ireland by the middle of 2004.

Based in Pasadena California, Overture pioneered the business of bid-per-click/position listings and is one of the few successful businesses fostered by start-up incubator, Idealabs. While advertisers bid for prominent positions and are charged by the click-through, the search firm makes the bulk of its revenues through the distribution of search results MSN and Yahoo. With over 60% of its income stemming from two major players, Overture may be building on a foundation that sits atop a pile of quick-sand. MSN is likely going to drop Overture results in the near future as it ramps out its own search engine and Yahoo is about to acquire Overture and all its properties and assets. With the loss of MSN as a partner and a likely revaluing of Yahoo's financial input, Overture's future growth may not be 99.999% solid. Nevertheless, revenues from 2002 were great and projections for 2003 are even greater, following the general trend of rapid growth in the search sector.

The vast majority of Overture's business continues to come from the US with $635.11 million of a total reported $667.73 million in revenues generated by US advertisers in 2002. Overture's projected 2003 targets are much higher at an estimated $1 billion in global revenues, $150 million of which will come from its European outlets.

Moving aggressively into Europe is a remarkable gamble for Overture but the company's history tells us that what appears to be a gamble, tends to pay off in the end. In the beginning, most industry watchers said that search engine advertisers would never go for a bid-for-placement scheme. The industry gurus were wrong and Overture revolutionized the search industry. The rest, as they say, is evolving history.

Major Player Update: Google Turns 5

Happy Birthday to Google... Happy Birthday to Google...
Happy Birthday Dear SearchEngineWePlacedOurTrustandFaithinandNowRulestheWorrrrrlllld....
Happy Birthday to Google.

Five years ago Sunday, Google founders Sergey Brin and Larry Page completed and filed the incorporation documents for a small, garage-based startup search engine known as Google. According to I. T. industry myth, the incorporation was completed in order to enable Brin and Page to cash a $100,000 cheque from Sun Microsystems founder, Andy Bechtolsheim.

Once established, the company grew rapidly to become the largest, freshest and most used information gathering resource the world has ever seen. At age five, Google is not the oldest or most experienced search tool on the block but it is the world's current favourite. Their sixth year will be a fairly challenging period for the staff and management at Google as the search engine war reaches a point of critical mass (likely in spring 2004). In the meantime, HAPPY BIRTHDAY to our friends at Google. Enjoy the day.

Weekly Quick Tip: UPDATE YOUR ANTI-VIRUS SOFTWARE, NOW

"Holy Big Bytes Batman, that attack was SOBIG it spawned at least six different variants before timing out!"

The SOBIG virus spawned its way across the Internet this week, attacking and infecting hundreds of thousands of computers and networks along the way. The scariest thing about this virus is that it had a time-out date of, September 10. That means it was likely just a test run for something bigger, scarier and more destructive. As we don't know any more than we read, we can't tell you what the virus will do or what any variant might do in the future. We do know that the goal is to inflict maximum damage in one way or another, though like most others, we don't know what damage or how they plan to inflict it.

'nuff said?... update your AntiVirus software now!

The Net Reality: Google Bans Some Political Commentary Sites (but leaves others)

Here at StepForth, we try not to wear our politics on our sleeves. Some of us are quite conservative while others on the staff are anarchist/libertarians. Most of us would fall into the squishy Canadian middle of social liberals/fiscal conservatives. One thing we all agree on is the sacred nature of freedom of opinion and speech in all facets of society, regardless of how we personally feel about what is being said. Search Engines should not be ruled by partisan politics but Google seems to have been led in that direction.

Recently, Google news shut the popular anarchist open-publishing site, San Francisco Indymedia out of Google-News over a word it considered anti-semetic. The word that got SF Indymedia banned, "zionazi" is unquestionably offensive, but, so are words like "raghead", "towelhead", and "camel-jockey", all of which come from the writings of US military personnel and all of which have been found on Google News. SF Indymedia claims to have received email threatening to have their news-feed removed from Google over articles critical of the Israeli state's treatment of Palestinians. It is odd that an ultra-left wing site faces a total ban from Google-News over offensive wording when obviously racist slurs continue to appear from the ultra-right. SF Indymedia is continuing to speak with Google regarding this issue, however, in a recent report they say they don't have much hope of being reinstated anytime soon.

In the immortal words of French philosopher Francois Marie Arouet Voltaire, (1694-1778)
"I do not agree with what you have to say, but I'll defend to the death your right to say it."

Without the freedom to express ourselves, we become our own greatest enemy. In the equally immortal words of Pogo, "We have seen the enemy and he is us!"
