| Highlight
of the Week |
| MyWay.com
is a new directory/search engine portal that has huge aspirations.
The plan? To compete with Yahoo by providing everything that Yahoo
does without any banners or pop-up advertisements while having a
search function powered by, who else, but Google.
This is a link to an interview with Bill Daugherty, CEO of My Way.
This
interview delves into the 'best of both worlds' (Google + Yahoo
+ No Ads) attitude that MyWay has adopted and hints at a very aggressive
campaign against Yahoo! within the coming months. Will it work?
It very well could, but surfers are notoriously fickle and will
be on the watch for instability. The MyWay perfectionist strategy
that emphasizes privacy and solid, all-in-one functionality seems
to be everything that an avid searcher could ask for. but will
it be viable and will they hold to their principles? We are watching.

Players Update |
| Last
week we noted the unmatched and sometimes uncomfortable power that
Google has over the Internet world. Well it has brought up many
interesting questions that has the business community muttering
about possible policies to protect websites dependant on search
engines. See
this article for a full description of the issues.
Yahoo
is continuing to make some major changes to its directory format
and functionality. Ever since Yahoo! made Google the majority search
result provider for its database (a bad move since it diminishes
Yahoo!'s independent status and unique identity) it has been making
deals with more 3rd parties to increase the quality of content on
its site. The latest addition has been CitySearch.com as the local
news and events content provider for each U.S. State.

Overture's
new autobid system appears convenient but it has a major catch that
users should be aware of.
The Autobid Scoop
As with any bid-per-placement system you have to pay slightly higher
than your competitor to move above him in position. BUT, with the
new system it is possible to end up paying a lot more than your
competitor simply because you have to beat their autobid amount
before you will stay in your position. As a result the positions
can be much like the following example:
#1: $0.50, #2: $0.06, #3:
$0.05
Looks like position #1 is paying too much doesn't it? But to be
number one the competitor had to beat #2's autobid of $0.49. This
is the catch, and it makes the autobid system as unpredictable as
an unwatched child.
Our solution, unless you have very deep pockets try not to set
an autobid any higher than $0.10 higher than your initial bid and
check on it regularly. This should prevent bid gouging and unexpected
account drains. |

Quick Tip |
Titles:
It is just amazing how many web sites have titles (the text in the
top blue bar of your browser) that are not utilized properly. The
simple fact is that the title of a web site should reflect the ideal
search term that you would want associated with the web site. For
example, if you owned a web site called Ray's Bikes devoted to bike
sales then the title of the site could be "Bicycle Sales -
Ray's Bikes". The reality is that many sites merely outline
the name of their company in the title of their web site expecting
new customers to find them by name alone. there is an inherent
flaw in logic there. The search engines place a great deal of weight
on titles so be sure to properly format them to increase your chances
for a top 10 placement. |
